If you are planning to take a vacation and you will be traveling where a hotel is needed, to save a lot of money, you will need to prepare before you go. The first step is to look at the route you will be taking when driving. Then decide where and when you will be stopping for the night. This will help you determine what cities that you will need a hotel for. When deciding the cities you will be stopping for the night, remember large cities will often have no room and are higher in rates. If your goal is to stop in a large city, try to find a small town outside the city. The hotel rooms will be less expensive and they usually are not overbooked.
Once you have decided your route and where you will be stopping locate hotels in the area and call for reservations. In today's society even the smaller mom and pop style hotels take charge cards and reservations. Be sure to take all the information, they may have restrictions on what time they will hold the reservation, and where to pick the keys up at if you arrive late.
If you have made the decision to stay in some of the larger hotel chains, there are a few suggestions they will help you save time and money in the hotel rat race. The one down side of larger hotel chains is that when a large convention comes to town, they are usually all booked. The larger hotels have the rooms to accommodate such large groups and they offer the conventions discounts with luxury service.
Whichever you have chosen, when you arrive at the hotel, check your bags. Then go to the payphone in the lobby or nearest payphone and call the hotel where you are staying. The reason for calling is to confirm your reservation, at this time give them your charge card number, and go on your way. This will insure if conventions are staying you will be able to side step check-in lines. To avoid the long line at the check out desk after a convention or a large group check in, is to check out early in the morning, before the official checkout time which is usually around noon or 1:00p.m.
The best way to save money in any hotel is if you are expecting a phone call. When expecting a phone call leave the room, notify the front desk that you are expecting a call but you have to step out. The front desk will transfer your calls to another room. If you prefer you may ask the front desk to hold all calls until you return, this will insure you are not billed for long distance at hotel rates. When you return the front desk will inform you of any messages and then you can choose to use a payphone to return the call by charge card or calling card; these rates are fifty percent less than the hotel rates.
To obtain the best service in any hotel do not let yourself be disappointed by the hotel. Do not depend on them for all your information. If you are looking for particular services in the city contact the local convention bureau, these are set up just for one reason; to help out of town travelers find the services they need. |
